The other characters help her along: one is a good and healthy adult-child relationship, another helps her to recognize and develop her sense of empathy for her fellow kind, and a third teaches her about beauty and a love of nature. This unabridged audio book is beautifully read by Natasha Gostwick of Storynory. Mary's ability to grow and change after losing everything make it even more profound than a fairy tale. It tells the story of Mary Lennox, a contrary orphan, who comes to live in. Anywhose, a little bird tells Mary of a secret garden planted by her late aunt being shut down after her death. At first we all learn to hate the little brat. The house is old, dusty and filled with secrets. At first blush Mary is a spoiled, self-absorbed brat - she grew up unloved and unwanted, and is certainly "quite contrary." When she discovers behind high walls a mysterious and unkempt garden on the manor's property, her imagination and emotions begin to awaken. The Secret Garden is a novel of Mary Mary quite contrary, whose parents die due to cholera and is sent off to live with an uncle. She is described as ugly, ill-tempered, and viciously demanding in short, she is 'as tyrannical and selfish a little pig as ever lived.' At the same time, however, the reader is given to understand. When Mary's parents die, she is sent to live in England with her uncle, a crotchety old widower. The novel begins by introducing the reader to Mary although it would perhaps be more accurate to say it begins by introducing us to her faults. God is equated with something impersonal like Magic, and the effect of good. It is the story of little Mary Lennox, a girl who'd grown up in India spoiled by her servants, whose primary job it was to be seen and not heard. The storys outlook is a little preachy and has some very strange theology in it. The Secret Garden (1911) is a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. she wandered out into the garden and began to play by herself under a tree near the veranda. ![]()
